Cosmetology

Cosmetology is challenging, rewarding profession that offers the opportunity for artistic expression as well as financial security. The entire field of cosmetology includes hair dressing, esthetics [facial work], skin, hair, scalp, nails [manicures] and make-up. A wide variety of job opportunities are available to the licensed cosmetologists. Included are: beauty salon operator, beauty salon manager, beauty salon owner, specialist in any particular branches of cosmetology. [Colorists, hair and scalp specialist, make-up artist, esthetician, stylist, etc]. Cosmetology teacher, supervisor, manufacturer representative, member of a research staff testing new products or manufacturers of beauty products, platform artist, technical writer.

The cosmetology course consists of practical “hands-on” and related classes. The course is broken down into four years, starting with basic procedures to more advanced material.  Cosmetology students must be 16 years of age before they start earning trade hours. Upon reaching 1,000 hours students must be required to successfully pass the Massachusetts state board exam [75% or better is required to pass- a prerequisite for graduation]. Cosmetology students will be graded for both shop and related classes. Two separate grades will be given and students must pass both in order to be promoted to the next grade.

Opportunities

Salon stylist, salon manager, salon owner, hair colorist, photo stylist with modeling agencies and theatre groups, platform artists, department store cosmetic consultant, school owner or director, instructor [private or vocational] manufactures representative or field technician, distributor/sales consultant, product analysis, nail technician, or a trade publication publisher, writer or editor.
