Chapter 7 - Prototyping the Campus Network
It is a recommended practice to test any new design before design approval and implementation. Testing provides a proof-of-concept for the design. There are two common methods to do proof-ofconcept testing: on a prototype network or installing a pilot on existing network.
The decision to create a prototype or a pilot depends on the following factors:
- The type of testing required
- The potential disruption from a pilot on the existing network
Before beginning a proof-of-concept test, a detailed test plan should be created to outline the test strategy and the expected results. A proof-of-concept test demonstrates new or improved functionality of the network and verifies that the design works as expected. When it is not possible to duplicate the physical network environment to perform a proof-of-concept test, it might be necessary to use a simulation software program to test the design. Prototypes and simulations can be used to identify risks and weaknesses inherent in the network design.

Reading Assignment:
Use the link on this page to Cisco Networking Academy and read Chapter 7 - Prototyping the Campus Network.

Homework:
Download the Chapter 7 Case Study PDF and the Chapter 7 Packet Tracer file from the case study folder in the documents section of the portal. Send your results before the next meeting and be prepared to discuss your answers in class.

Labs Assignment:
Complete all the activities and then the hands-on labs in Chapter 7

Interactive Activities online:
Activity 7-1: Decide Whether a Prototype or Pilot Is Appropriate (7.1.1)
Activity 7-2: Identify How Tools Are Used (7.1.4)
Activity 7-3: Identify the Correct Port State (7.3.3)
